ART

Pathway: Fashion Design

In this pathway children are introduced to the idea that design is often about relationships – between the designer/artist and the person who then sees, buys or wears the end result. Where and how do the experiences and passions of both designer and viewer meet? How is one affected by the other and what can we learn from each other?

Disciplines:

Fashion, Painting, Collage, Sketchbooks

Medium:

Paper, Acrylic Paint, Tape

Artists:

Alice Fox, Rahul Mishra, Pyer Moss, Tatyana Antoun, Hormazd Narielwalla

How do designers turn 2D ideas into 3D fashion forms?Designers begin with flat shapes and drawings and use materials like paper, paint, collage and tape to explore how those shapes can become 3D forms, thinking about how the garment might look and feel when worn.

How do artists use colour, pattern, and texture to make fashion designs expressive?Artists and fashion designers choose and combine colour, line, pattern, shape and texture to convey personality, mood, cultural influences or function in their designs, experimenting and testing ideas before creating a final piece.

Form – The three‑dimensional shape of a fashion design when made.

Pattern – A repeated visual design or motif used in decoration.

Textile – A material made from fibres such as cloth, paper, fabric or similar surfaces used in fashion.

RE

Northumberland Agreed Syllabus Unit U2.6 For Christians, what kind of king is Jesus?

Group discussions/debate

What might a Christian might learn from the Bible about eternal life and how this might impact their daily lives?Christians believe that the Bible tells them that eternal life is a special gift from God for those who believe in Jesus, which helps them to make good choices, be kind to others, and trust God every day.

Eternal life – The Christian belief in living forever with God after death.

Bible – The Christian holy book that teaches about God, Jesus, and how to live a good life.

Faith – Trusting and believing in God, which guides how Christians live each day.

DT

Pathway: Steady Hand Game

Understand what is meant by fit for purpose design and form follows function. Design and develop a steady hand game using a series circuit, including housing and backboard.

Core: Electrical systems

Prototype – An early version of a product that is made so it can be tested and improved.

Design Brief – A clear description of what a product should do, who it is for, and the requirements it must meet.

Refine – To make small changes to improve a design after testing.

Why is testing an important part of the design process?Testing is an important part of the design process because it checks that a product works as intended, is safe to use, and meets the requirements set out in the design brief.

How can the results of testing be used to improve a product? The results of testing can be used to improve a product by identifying problems, refining features, and making informed changes to make the design more effective and successful.

SCIENCE

National Curriculum:

Electricity

associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit

compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches

use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram

Discussions, Sharing ideas/views

Investigations:

Length of wires/distance travelled

WOW! Wonder Launch

Big Question: Why do some materials let electricity pass through them and others don’t?

Focus: Comparative and fair testing (materials and electrical conductivity)

Outline: Children build a simple circuit and test a range of everyday classroom objects (e.g. metal paperclip, plastic ruler, rubber, foil) to see whether they allow electricity to flow. Before testing, they make predictions and record results in a table. Only one variable is changed each time (the material being tested) to keep the test fair.

Look for patterns: Do metals always allow electricity to pass through? Which types of materials act as insulators? Are there any surprises or exceptions?

What factors affect the brightness of a lamp or the loudness of a buzzer in a circuit? The brightness of a lamp or the loudness of a buzzer is affected by the number and voltage of cells in the circuit. More cells or higher voltage increase the energy supplied, making the lamp brighter or the buzzer louder.

Why do components like bulbs, buzzers, or switches vary in their function within a circuit?Components vary in function based on factors such as the amount of current flowing through them, the voltage applied, and whether the circuit is open or closed.

How are simple circuits represented in diagrams, and why is this important?Simple circuits are represented using recognised symbols, such as a circle with a cross for a lamp or a rectangle for a buzzer.

Circuit – A complete path that allows electricity to flow.

Voltage – The power provided by a cell or battery that affects how strong a component works.

Component – A part of an electrical circuit, like a bulb, buzzer, switch, or wire.

Switch – A device that can open or close a circuit to turn it on or off.

Symbol – A simple drawing used to represent a component in a circuit diagram.

Electricity Poster

Create a clear poster that explains how electricity works. Include key facts, simple diagrams, and labels to help teach someone else. Make it neat, informative, and easy to understand.

Write a letter

Write a persuasive letter about an issue or idea you feel strongly about. Try to convince the reader by giving clear reasons, facts, and examples. Use persuasive language and organise your ideas clearly so your opinion is easy to understand.

Character Costume Design

Choose a character from your favourite story and design a costume for them. Draw and label the costume, showing colours, materials, and key features. Write a short explanation of how your design links to the character’s personality, role, or setting in the story.
