BSPS Seesaw & Facebook Guide

Introduction

At Bedlington Station Primary School, we use Seesaw to give pupils flexible, creative tools to record and share their learning—through photos, videos, drawings, voice notes, and typed responses. It supports pupil voice, independence, and inclusive practice by allowing children to show their thinking in different ways. Seesaw also helps teachers track progress, gather assessment evidence, and keep families connected with their child’s learning. Consistent use across the school ensures it remains purposeful, manageable, and safe.

Getting Started

Expectations

Frequency of Posts

Post regularly for Core or Focus Subjects (e.g. English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art). This should reflect current classroom learning and show a range of pupil responses over time.

For Ongoing Subjects (e.g. RE, PSHE, PE, Spanish), aim for at least one post per half term, ideally as a culmination of learning at the end of a unit. This might be a final piece of work, a class reflection, a pupil summary, or a photo/video of a practical outcome.

Posts can include photos, videos, scanned work, audio reflections, or direct responses to activities—whichever best captures pupil learning.

Post Format and Organisation

Use a clear, consistent Activity Title Format, - "Context (Subject) Title" e.g. "Portal Radio (History) Ancient Greeks: Sparta Vs Athens"

Add a title photo/slide/image.

Always assign activities or posts to the correct subject folder.

Avoid uploading blank or empty activities—each post should have a clear purpose and link to the current curriculum.

Photo and Video

To ensure clarity, consistency, and effectiveness, please follow these guidelines when capturing pupil learning:

Always show the subject of learning clearly: Ask yourself—What is the learning outcome I want to capture? If it’s written work, focus on the work. If it’s a process, capture the child engaging with it.

Avoid photos from behind heads: These do not clearly show the child or the learning. Instead, either:

Take a photo or video of the work only, or

Position yourself in front of the child, at table height, to capture them working with focus and purpose.

Minimise background distractions and be mindful of other children who may be unintentionally included in the frame and what they are doing at the time.

Tagging Pupils (Posts with photos/videos only)

Unfortunately, Seesaw uses full names in tags. This is an issue in relation to safeguarding.

When tagging individual pupils, ensure that only their name is selected in the post.

For group posts (for a few children where linked names would identify individuals), duplicate the post and tag each child separately to maintain a clear and private learning record.

For group posts of 5 or more children, multiple children may be tagged.

For many posts, it will be appropriate to tag 'everyone'.

Type of Tasks

Seesaw offers a flexible range of task types to suit both individual and class learning. The following are the most commonly used formats at Bedlington Station Primary School:

In general, all work/learning should be added to a task already set up via 'Create Activity, rather than using the 'Post to Journal' option.

Use 'Post to Journal' for ad hoc posts. These should still be linked to a subject folder.

You can enhance templates by including:

Key slides from teaching

Vocabulary prompts

Instructions, questions, or success criteria embedded in the pages

This supports understanding and ensures pupils stay focused on the learning outcome.

Whole Class Photo or Video

Use for practical lessons, group outcomes, performances, or shared experiences (e.g. science experiments, PE, forest school, music).

Create activity and then add photos/videos following activity. Tag ‘Everyone’ after adding photos - children then only need to open task and click green tick to add to their journal.

Template Tasks for Individuals or Groups

Create an activity with a prepared template for pupils to complete on their own device or as a small group.

For group work, pupils can work collaboratively on one device and tag each team member when submitting.

Ongoing Individual Template

Use a multi-page template for tasks that build over time, such as: Science observations, Diary-style reflections, Topic scrapbooks

Pupils add a new page each time they update their work, creating a continuous learning record.

Make sure each update is dated or titled clearly.

Children save a draft (orange tick) until ready to submit

Ongoing Whole Class Task

Use a shared class activity to build a collective record over time, such as: Steel pans lessons, Weekly reflection videos, Topic displays or working walls,

Teachers or pupils can add new posts under the same activity, keeping the content organised and easily reviewable.
