BedlingtonStation PrimarySchool

Shine Time gives children the chance to have their voices heard. Through these sessions, pupils will be encouraged to share their ideas, thoughts, and feelings about different aspects of school life and their own experiences. This is an opportunity for them to influence decisions, suggest improvements, and celebrate what they enjoy, helping them to feel valued and included in shaping the life of the school.

Key Questions

Where/when do you feel safe in school?

Activity

EYFS/KS1

Children will explore what safety feels like in school. Begin with a circle discussion using a “talking teddy” to support turn-taking, where children complete the sentence “I feel safe when…”.Afterwards, take the class on a short walk around the school. In each area, encourage children to talk about how safe they feel and why, prompting simple explanations linked to their experiences.

Script: We are going to talk about feeling safe. When you hold the talking teddy, you can say:“I feel safe when…”Then, we will walk around school together. In each place, we will think: Do I feel safe here? Why do I feel safe?

KS2

Children will evaluate safety across the school environment. Provide a simple map of the school and guide pupils on a walk around key areas. In each location, children should discuss how safe they feel, giving reasons for their views.Encourage pupils to rate each area (e.g. 1–5 or using a simple scale) and record their thoughts on the map to support later discussion or analysis.

Script: We are going to explore how safe different areas of our school feel. You will use a map to help you. As we walk around, think about each place: How safe does it feel? Why do you think that? You will give each place a safety score and share your ideas.
