Ask any child or adult at Bedlington Station Primary School and they will tell you the 'The Rainbow Station' is a very special place indeed. The Rainbow Station is staffed by Mrs Johnston (Senior HLTA) and Mrs Donaldson (Children's Well-Being Mentor) and is accessed by children across the school at a variety of times and for variety of reasons. The philosophy behind the Rainbow Station is one of support, inclusion and care. All are welcome in the Rainbow Station and children in school can't wait to walk through the door.
In the Rainbow Station a range of tailored programmes are used to support children with their academic, social and emotional needs. The Rainbow Station is open outside of lesson times too. All children can join in the fun of the Rainbow Station at lunchtimes.
'Bubble time' is a system in school that allows all children to let an adult know if they are worried about something or would like to talk. Children are encouraged to talk to their class teacher and other adults in school, however if they feel they would like to talk to someone in the Rainbow Station they can use bubble time. Each child has their own special 'peg' which in located in their classroom. If they have a concern or need a chat they can simply take their peg and clip it onto the bubble time line in the Rainbow Station. They then know that an adult will come and find them for a special chat in the Rainbow Station. Children in KS2 can also use an online digital form to 'put their peg on'.
Diversityville is a special place. The people who live here have different backgrounds, beliefs, families and opinions. The residents of Diversityville see this for the good thing it is! The are accepting of others and recognise that there are strengths in being different from your friends. They stand up for each other and challenge discrimination. By getting to know the people in Diversityville we can make our street, town, country and world a better place by sharing the values of this special place.
The Guardians represent 5 core attributes and values in all of us. They have gifted us 5 incredible Power Stones which glow brightly when each of these core attributes and values are present in all of us. We work hard to keep the Power Stones charged and glowing. If a Power Stone dims, we know we must work on developing that core attribute or value in ourselves.
Our 'Rainbow Library' is a collection of books which feature people with a range of diverse characteristics, families and outlooks. This helps us ‘embrace difference’, be accepting individuals, to explore what makes us and others special and to find out what we have in common with each other!
Our school council is made up of 7 pupils from Year 5 and Year 6. These pupils were selected in an election where all pupils in school had a vote. Each member represents a class in school and seeks out the views and ideas of that class to share with the council. The council also has a chairperson, secretary and a staff mentor. The council meets monthly to discuss issues and ongoing projects. All pupils can give feedback to the council via feedback forms in the school corridor. The council discusses the ideas generated here with their staff mentor and the Head Teacher
Our school pledge embodies our commitment to excellence, kindness, and responsibility. These inspiring words, signed each year by all members of our school family, serve as a reminder of our shared values: to strive for greatness, embrace learning with curiosity, and treat everyone with respect and fairness. Rooted in compassion and a sense of community, our pledge guides us to stand against discrimination, stay safe online and offline, and support one another as we reach for the stars. It’s a promise to grow, learn, and make a difference—together, we rise to be our very best.
We use 'Zones of Regulation' to help children understand and manage their emotions, energy, and behaviors in different situations. It divides feelings and states of mind into four color-coded "zones": Blue (sad, tired, or bored), Green (calm, focused, ready to learn), Yellow (excited, anxious, or wiggly), and Red (angry, out of control, or overwhelmed). The aim is to give children tools to identify their emotions and learn strategies to self-regulate, so they can move toward ensuring the are 'Ready, Respectful and safe', so that they are best able to learn and interact positively. This helps build emotional awareness, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
