BedlingtonStation PrimarySchool

At Bedlington Station Primary School (BSPS), we recognise that traditional formal school seating does not suit all children and often provides very limited alternative options for the diverse comfort, sensory, physical, or behavioural needs of all learners. Research supports this understanding, showing that traditional chair-and-desk setups can limit movement and impose uniform postures unsuitable for many children.

In contrast, dynamic seating environments offer an adaptable alternative that respects individual ergonomic needs, reducing physical fatigue, and enhancing focus, engagement and cognitive development. Our approach ensures that all children are supported by an environment that adapts to them, empowering each learner to reach their potential by offering flexibility, choice, and comfort in their workspace. This allows children to engage with their education in ways that suit their individual needs, creating an environment where they can thrive.

These spaces are designed to be adaptable, inclusive, and engaging, ensuring every learner has access to an environment that promotes focus, creativity, and well-being.

Dynamic Sensory Learning Space Features at BSPS

Lighting

Harsh overhead lighting will be avoided where possible. Adjustable lighting, ranging from bright to soft, will be available to accommodate activities requiring focus, relaxation, or creativity.

Learners may use adjust lighting levels within designated zones to suit their needs, including accessing seating closer to natural light.

Flexible Seating

A variety of seating options, including beanbags, standard table seating, low/floor table seating with cushions or stools, standing desks, sofas, lap trays, clipboard  and movable tables, will be provided to support comfort and movement.

Learners are encouraged to choose seating that helps them remain focused and engaged.

Research supports that alternating between seating options such as standing desks, floor cushions, or wobble stools helps maintain better spinal alignment and reduces physical fatigue. These choices also promote body awareness and allow learners to select what feels most comfortable, enhancing well-being and reducing the risk of musculoskeletal discomfort.

Calming Sounds and Nature-Inspired Elements

Gentle background sounds, such as calming music or nature-inspired audio, will enhance the atmosphere and support focus.

Plants, natural textures, and muted colours (where appropriate) will create a soothing and enriching environment.

Adaptable Layouts

Furniture and zones can be reconfigured to promote collaborative group work or quiet individual reflection.

Layouts can be adapted to match the goals of specific lessons or activities, including creating floor space.

Sensory Engagement

Multi-sensory elements such as textured surfaces, visual stimuli, and tactile resources will be available to inspire curiosity and exploration.

Pupils will be supported in using sensory tools and calm zones to enhance their learning experience.

Implementation and Management of Dynamic Sensory Learning Spaces at BSPS

Staff Support

While pupils have choices around the spaces they work in, staff will actively guide children in selecting the most suitable workspaces based on the requirements of the task and the individual’s behaviour or sensory needs. Staff will help pupils understand how different seating and environments can enhance their focus and learning. Staff will also consider handwriting and presentation needs when helping children choose seating but will ensure these are balanced with the child’s comfort and engagement.

Fair Access to Seating Options

Procedures will be in place to ensure fair use of seating and resources:

Pupils will be encouraged to use a variety of seating options throughout the day to experience different settings and maximise learning opportunities.

Staff will monitor seating use to ensure no pupil monopolises specific spaces, promoting equitable access for all.

Time limits or rotation systems may be implemented for highly popular seating areas during peak demand to ensure all pupils can benefit. Specific areas or seating may not be accessible if not appropriate to a particular task or time frame.

Opportunities for Choice

Staff will structure lessons and activities to include multiple points in the day where pupils can make choices about their seating or workspace. This ensures every child has regular opportunities to select what works best for their learning.

Ongoing Review and Adaptation

Staff will regularly observe and assess the effectiveness of seating arrangements and pupil behaviour within the spaces, making adjustments as needed to meet individual and group needs.

This structured yet flexible approach ensures all learners benefit from Dynamic Sensory Learning Spaces while fostering fairness, inclusion, and evidence-based practices. These spaces create a foundation for healthier physical habits, greater engagement, and improved learning outcomes.
