Social, Moral, Spiritual, Cultural Development

Our Commitment

Bedlington Station Primary School is dedicated to serving its community and surrounding areas. We understand the importance of nurturing the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of our students. Recognising the diverse backgrounds and beliefs within the United Kingdom, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that celebrates and respects this diversity. This statement outlines the key principles of SMSC that we actively promote and the ways in which we integrate them into our school life.

Social

Some of the ways we support social development at BSPS...

We explicitly teach social skills, through our curriculum, including our PSHE curriculum, Jigsaw, as well as through other planned opportunities during each school year.

Our restorative behaviour approach, along with our school rules are designed to avoid and resolve conflict, supporting children in developing social skills and underpinning with an understanding of how we can all best get along.

Opportunities for children to take part in activities and situations where collaboration and negotiation are integral to the outcome. This many include working with peers in class, with children across school or visitors. Children are encouraged to be confident, ask questions and explain their thinking to others.

Children are able to join in with social events such as, 'Elf Shelf', discos, school fairs and parent lunches.

Opportunities are given for children to experience the world beyond school, for example, theatre visits,  high school transition and residential visits.

Moral

Some of the ways we support  moral development at BSPS...

A clear school rules system with rewards achievable by all and clear support and outcomes for those who choose not to follow the school rules. Rules revisited by staff and pupils regularly.

Buddies support everyone in school by being role models, showing use all how to do the right thing.

Class rules agreed and shared with each other.

Opportunities to discuss and debate moral issues are including our PSHE curriculum, Jigsaw, as well as through other planned opportunities during each school year.

'The Guardians' help guide us in school, ensuring we have an understanding of what concepts such as kindness and fairness look like in practice.

The Rainbow Station and Treehouse are safe places where children can talk and learn how to be a good friend.

Spiritual

Some of the ways we support spiritual development at BSPS...

Our RE curriculum ensures that children experience a wide range of religions and concepts in a safe place where curiosity is encouraged.

We have strong links with local establishments such as St John's Church and Reverend Ian.

We do however, actively acknowledge that spiritual development encompasses more than faith and religion.

We provide planned opportunities for 'awe and wonder' across the curriculum, from our 'WOW! practical science introductions, to our all encompassing whole school projects.

We encourage children to seek out more and become all they can be. We celebrate achievements outside of school in assemblies.

'The Guardians' help guide us in school, ensuring we have an understanding of what concepts such as curiosity and creativity look like in practice.

Our 'Rainbow Library' showcases people from all walks of life and their achievements.

Opportunities are given for children to experience the world beyond school, for example visits to the theatre visits and visiting artists and musicians.

We create music and sing every week in school. Key Stage 2 children learn to play the steel pans and KS1 children sing with a specialist teacher.

We have a family of special people who we help when they visit use including Professor Crankpot, the absent minded scientist and Olive Stein, the famous businesswoman.

Cultural

Some of the ways we support cultural development at BSPS...

Our school has an ethos which promotes cultural development and cultural heritage. We ensure children have access to their own culture and the culture of others through our curriculum.

Our curriculum includes opportunities to learn about art, music, language, festivals, special people and people from here at home in the United Kingdom.

Our curriculum includes opportunities to learn about art, music, language, festivals, special people and people from a range of places around the world.

Our 'Rainbow Library' showcases people from all walks of life and their achievements. It includes stories from other cultures and from our own.

We celebrate special times from our own culture such as harvest and Christmas as well as the festivals from other cultures such as Chinese New Year and Eid.

We embrace the cultural diversity within the population of our school, ensuring opportunities are taken to discuss and share with others.
