Time to explore!

Regina Flowerton, world famous explorer, botanist and environmentalist recruited us to work at Flowerton Enterprises as Expedition Planners. She contacted us from the airport on her way to her first destination, China, then from there she headed to Australia. We researched the countries she would be visiting, finding out about the people there and their way of life. We also found some landmarks for Regina to visit including the Great Wall of China and the Sydney Opera House.

We became familiar with maps, using paper maps and digital maps to locate places. We used Google maps to explore the places Regina was visiting. As part of our map training we used maps of our local area to create our own large maps.

We investigated areas of the world and learned the names and locations of the 7 continents and 5 oceans as well as the warm and cold regions of the globe.

To help Regina know more about the places she was visiting we found about the culture of the countries. We learned about Chinese paper cutting and had a go at creating our own. Regina also sent use a parcel from Australia filled with amazing aboriginal art. We explored different ways of creating the effects they used and made our own aboriginal handprint.

Regina also told us about an aboriginal dreamtime story about the Mimis, who are playful spirits who come out at night to clean up the world. We wrote our own version of the story for Regina using similes.

Regina is still in Australia and we are looking forward to seeing her soon!
